Treated water is a crucial part of power generation. Treated water used in boilers, cooling towers and turbines is vital to ensure efficient and reliable system operation. Untreated or poorly treated water leads to corrosion and damage to steam generation equipment. Generating power requires large quantities of water for use at almost every stage of the process, from boiler feed systems to cooling condensers & beds and contaminant scrubbers.

There is a reason why thermoelectric (coal, nuclear or natural gas) power plants in particular are located near rivers, lakes or oceans. This is because they need a lot of water to generate electricity. These plants boil water by burning fossil fuel (or using a nuclear reaction) to create the steam that turns turbines. The steam needs to be cooled again with water before it can be used again to generate more electricity. Cooler and cleaner water cools the steam more effectively and allows for more efficient electricity generation. Water quality is almost as important as quantity when considering plant efficiency. The quality of raw water can vary depending on natural phenomena and man-made interactions. Therefore, in power plants, incoming water must be treated before use to remove sludge and sediments, dissolve suspended organic matter, adjust the pH level and disinfect the water by killing disease-causing microorganisms.
